Fun Fact: This tale of a boy interned by the Japanese forces during World War II may seem surreal. But I have an acquaintance who was the child of missionaries in the Philippines during the war, and he told me he experienced internment as depicted in the film. In my friend's case, the continuation of the story -- after the war -- is, in a way, even more unbelievable. His parents were asked to return to Japan to continue their missionary work, and so Larry spent more of his early years in Japan.

I looked online to see if I could find out more about this (and to see if I really remembered the story correctly!). The answer is yes: see http://documents.adventistarchives.org/Periodicals/FEDO/FEDO19750601.pdf On page six, Larry's mother describes the family's liberation from the internment camp in the Philippines: "The most beautiful sight we had ever seen: more than one hundred parachutes blossoming in the sky. It seemed that angels had come at last." (JTS3, 3/27/2020)
